 Instow beach
« Result #4 on Dec 22, 2008, 1:03pm »

Hello everyone, i have fished Instow beach this week twice in the evenings, first night resulted in 10 bass, from a couple of ounces going up to 3lb. Only the one to take home but very welcombe. Also taken was a flaty just topping the pound mark, and another 10 finger bass amoungst other chums fishing. We fished tide up using lug and king rag, bites all night. this helped as south westerly in your face.

Night two again resulted in a total of 15 finger bass, largest this time approx 1.5lb, some nice bites missed, all fish returned safely another enjoyable fish, no blank this helps. Tight lines over xmas and new year.

my cousin and i arrived at hartland quay 3 hours before low intending to fish it down and 3 hours back up. we were looking to break my cousins conger duck and we were feeling lucky! first cast for me resulted in a strap conger of just over 3 ft long on my first cast to half a mackerel. steve managed a small rockling of 6 inches long on his second cast. after this we managed several knocks down to low but as the tide started pushing the bites dried up. with the incoming tide the surf also picked up so we decided to move to bucks mill (safety first). steve had a good run on his first cast to squid and hit into something BIG. after a short fight both hooks on his pennel rig were straighened out and no fish. big huss maybe?? we had one more fish that night a dogfish of about 1 1/2lb and then we decided to call it quits as our fingers and toes were going numb in the -3C temp.

headed out to Capstone (Crapstone) last night to see if i could tempt ANYTHING fishy. fishing 4 down to low water resulted in nothing not even the slightest of bites.

At low water we decided to move round to the CV to see if anything was doing over there. first cast resulted in a small rockling about 12" long to prawn. after that we continued to get bites but no hook ups. the resident poor cod and pout popualtion having an early xmas party maybe?

oh and to the scum that thinks they are clever leaving a live rocking on the pier to die a slow death. 1. it was returned (eventually) alive to the water 2.with a bit of luck someone will catch you doing it one day and give you a very up close and personal view of the fishes enviroment!!!

well me and the cousin headed out last night in search of a venue that would give us some shelter from the gale foce South/South Westerly winds. we first tried Lynmouth, walking out as far to the right as we could only to find that at low water the beach is a mass of huge rcks that would have resulted in lost rear every cast! so after the walk back to the car we decided to have a look at Ilfracombe pier thinking nobody else in there right mind would be out in this weather!

at arriving at ilfracombe pier we were greeted by a mass of headlamps shining brightly away all over the pier! we walked down and chatted to a couple of guys to see what was happening and were informed that it was as dead as totenham hotspurs chances of winning the permiership this year, so not good!

we opted to fish off of north wall in the hope of a conger or cod but the condidtions were totally against us with such a powerful swell. with the tide only 3 hours in the spay was easily making it ofer the top of the wall and on occasions going higher than the lamp posts too! we finally called it quits at 4AM with no fish. better luck next time maybe!

 Lower Deck. Combe Martin 18/10/08

Headed off to combe martin to fish lower deck. was a big tide and perfect conditions for this mark. baits were mackerel, squid and mussel. things were very quiet all night except for my first codling of the sea which went to 1.8lb and as per last year was tempted to the good old mussel. this is becoming my most sucsessful bait for the cod with it out doing crab by at least 5 fish to 1 last year!

hopefully a good sign of things to come
